Since we wrote our last article on Sir Frank Whittle's role in the development of alcohol, it has been brought to our attention that he is not, in fact, solely responsible for the jet engine. I know. Frankly, the Germans had a jet powered aircraft flying almost two years before the English did even if Sir Frank thought of it first, but then our bar isn't called the Dr. Hans von Ohain so I thought it best not to mention it.
Dr. Hans von Ohain earned his doctorate in four years rather than the usual seven; presumably he did this by working hard through the vacations as well as in term time. Recently the progress of research has been scuppered from a great height by the recent eruption of vacation events for postgrads (and whoever else happens to be around) out of the primordial pizza left over from those nights in Frank's last term.
Had he been there at the first vacation event, the Function in Zippy's on Saturday the 21st, he would doubtless have shared our surprise at the serious and impressive turn-out; it seemed that life really did go on even if lots of people had gone away. Your correspondent listened carefully as birthday dedications were announced and deduced that there was quite a wide spread of ages present... also, there seemed to be a quite enthusiastic call for another event at some point that vacation.
So Friday the 27th then; once more a decent number of people in Zippy's and a late opening. Friday the 3rd and don't any of these people have homes to go to? Towards the end of that one, there was applause after each track. So we think they liked it.
Coming next term to a University which is considerably closer to Coventry than Warwick:
The snowballing success story that is Frank's Bar continues on Fridays, as does Jon Slade's ec-thingy-tric which has moved downstairs to Lynam's. Speaking of which, for grown-ups on Wednesdays Lynam's opens as an alternative to the really unpleasant singing coming from the Airport (Karaoke, shurely?)
But seriously, though, if this doesn't work then we're all of us looking at having a really dull summer.
See you there, then.
If you have any better ideas or would like to take issue with us personally then we'll be seeing you at the Postgraduate Committee Meeting at 6pm on Wednesday the 29th of April, in Lynam's.
